May Event & Planning for Trans March

Hello! We are excited to announce our next letter-writing and mail processing event on Wednesday, May 24, from 6:30-8:30. This time we will be at Farley’s East, located at 33 Grand Ave near 19th St Bart. Details in the facebook event (invite your friends!) and below.

We are also looking for volunteers for this year’s Trans March on Friday, June 24! We will have a booth and blanket area in Dolores Park where will be writing “happy pride” cards to some of our incarcerated members. Volunteers will be answering questions and keeping track of card-writing supplies. We will be there from noon/early afternoon until the march begins at 6. Any chunk of time you are able to commit to being there would be much appreciated! Reply to this email (flyingoverwalls@gmail.com) with any questions or to rsvp.

We are continuing to visit some of our incarcerated members in Northern California prisons! If you have a penpal and are interested in visiting them, request that they send you a visitation form and then send it in. We can assist, if needed. We have visited Mule Creek State Prison, San Quentin and plan on returning to those as well as visiting California Medical Facility, CCWF, and possibly CSP-Sac. Be in touch to join our carpools.

Lastly, our friends at TGIJP have mail night every Tuesday this month—remaining dates are May 23 and 31st from 4-8pm at 234 Eddy St. More info here.
Hope to see you soon! Below is more info on our May 24 event:

Join Flying Over Walls (SF Bay Area Black & Pink) at Farley’s East Cafe for our monthly Letterwrighting Night & Mail Processing in Oakland!

We will have info on folks to send letters to, all the supplies, and ways to get more involved in the movement to abolish prisons. This month, we are also processing pen-pal request forms sent to us by inside members. You can write a letter, process mail, or do both! Mail processing is a data entry task that requires a computer, so please bring a laptop if you are able to. And please bring some dollars and change toward postage, if you can. Any money raised beyond the cost of supplies will be used to support both local & national Black & Pink projects.

Farley’s is 0.3 miles from 19th St. Bart. We will set up close to the front door on the first floor—note that Farley’s tends to be pretty crowded this time of day, and the door is often left open so it may get chilly. Food and beverages are available for purchase. The bathroom is gender-neutral and wheelchair accessible, but it is cleaned with scented products (citrus-based/organic). While this space is open to the public and not scent-free, please avoid wearing scented products in order to support folks with chemical sensitivies.
